A day dedicated to art and elegance in small medieval villages, from Soave to Marostica, from Cittadella to Castelfranco Veneto
- Our guide will meet you at your hotel.
- Visit to villages of the Veneto
- Lunch and tastings in a farmhouse
- Evening arrival in Venice
Starting from your hotel, we leave Verona to cross the last stretch of the Po Valley that ends near Venice. About 30kms from Verona is our first stop, Soave, famous for the wine that bears the same name, its Castle, whose presence is attested to in 934. This village whose name derives from the presence of the Suaves, or Swabians – is surrounded by walls built in 1369.
The picturesque village of Marostica is celebrated for its chess game with living characters in 15th century costume and for a famous variety of cherries. But it’s usually the walk up to the 14th century castle above the town that conquers visitors. The view includes the chessboard main square, the lower castle, the town’s entrance and the connecting walls, which ring the town.
The village of Cittadella, one of the historic symbols of the Veneto, it is a perfectly conserved medieval monument of great charm. Cittadella is distinguished by its circular walls, dating from back 1220, that have four gates each bearing the name of the city which it faces. Located in a strategic position between Padua, Vicenza and Treviso, it was Padua’s principal asset in the defence and protection from Treviso and Vicenza.
Sip a glass of wine at sunset, when Castelfranco’s fairytale castle is illuminated, in one of the many venues of Piazza Giorgione or strolling through the elegant Corso XXIX Aprile, with its ancient buildings. The site was developed and fortified by Treviso in 1195; its central area, the Castello consisting of a large square fortification with high walls and a moat. The town’s most illustrious son, Giorgio Zorzi, better known as Giorgione was one of the important painters of the 15th century. His altar piece of Castelfranco can be admired in the town’s Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and next door in Casa Pellizzari, the artist’s birthplace, there are some intriguing frescoes.
